Newtown Markets 2009 and Pole-Aerial-Photography

This last weekend was the annual newtown festiaval in sydney. i figured it would be a good time to try out a concept i’ve been working on for a little while now, a pole, with a camera on the end above a crowd.

it worked really well, and I’ll be offering this at weddings and events in the future. Most people were either confused or amused by the camera on top of the pole, so it was pretty effective at not attracting too much attention. (until the guy on the main stage called out “hey that’s a camera on the top of that pole, everybody wave”)

Do-It-Yourself Quick draw camera strap on the cheap

You may have seen the R-Strap or other quick draw straps on the market. they allow you to keep your camera under your jacket out of the way, and shoot quickly when the need arises with one hand. Very handy and a more comfortable way to carry your camera.

I have come up with a design that is a little more secure than the other DIY ones on the market, as there is no way that it will unscrew while your camera is attached unless you go and undo the locking plate. If you don’t trust your DIY skills, then just go and buy one, you don’t want $10,000 worth of camera falling to the ground because your home made clip unscrewed it’s self.

so anyway, here’s how to do it:

You will need:

1x 1/4″ bolt with about 3cm of thread.
3x large (2cm) washers to suit the above bolt
1x L-Bracket from an eBay remote flash controller (or something similar – it needs to be about 2cm square on each side, made of metal, and have 2x 7mm holes in it.)
1x Tripod pressure plate. You can get one from one of those cheapo tripods from a discount variety store for about $2. mine came from the top of a busted monopod.
1x Caribener, load bearing or locking type, about 5mm diameter.
A strap.

3. Attach the strap

4. Go Shooting!

I like to carry my 5d mkii with a 5omm prime on this strap when ever i am out, i just keep it under my jacket, and whip it out if something interesting comes up.

Some more photos are online, this time we went for a more traditional shoot. we shot in martin place among the busy sydney city crowds. When you have a big camera and lights, people like to watch what is happening, so as we moved about there were lots of little groups of onlookers where ever we went. it was fun!

the photos were all done with my Canon 5d Mk ii, and a Metz strobe attached to a beauty dish. The light was just used for a touch of fill, with the sun acting as our main light.

I visited newtown chess club on thursday, and had a chance to try out the EOS 5d Mark II’s ISO 6400 setting. i am impressed with the results, especially considering i was at a maximum of F4 for all of these. Click for the photos.

I have returned from a trip to melbourne for a week. it’s the first time i’ve been there for a holiday with a real chance to explore and meet people, and what a great city it is! Most of the trip was spent exploring the city and surrounds, carrying a moleskine and a camera. click for more photos.
