Do-It-Yourself Quick draw camera strap on the cheap
April 19th, 2009 · DIY, Uncategorized
You may have seen the R-Strap or other quick draw straps on the market. they allow you to keep your camera under your jacket out of the way, and shoot quickly when the need arises with one hand. Very handy and a more comfortable way to carry your camera.
I have come up with a design that is a little more secure than the other DIY ones on the market, as there is no way that it will unscrew while your camera is attached unless you go and undo the locking plate. If you don’t trust your DIY skills, then just go and buy one, you don’t want $10,000 worth of camera falling to the ground because your home made clip unscrewed it’s self.
so anyway, here’s how to do it:
You will need:
- 1x 1/4″ bolt with about 3cm of thread.
- 3x large (2cm) washers to suit the above bolt
- 1x L-Bracket from an eBay remote flash controller (or something similar – it needs to be about 2cm square on each side, made of metal, and have 2x 7mm holes in it.)
- 1x Tripod pressure plate. You can get one from one of those cheapo tripods from a discount variety store for about $2. mine came from the top of a busted monopod.
- 1x Caribener, load bearing or locking type, about 5mm diameter.
- A strap.
1. Put it together
2. Attach it to the camera
3. Attach the strap
4. Go Shooting!
I like to carry my 5d mkii with a 5omm prime on this strap when ever i am out, i just keep it under my jacket, and whip it out if something interesting comes up.
For how to use one, just Google it

Another shoot with viktoriya – this time more traditional
March 22nd, 2009 · Uncategorized
Some more photos are online, this time we went for a more traditional shoot. we shot in martin place among the busy sydney city crowds. When you have a big camera and lights, people like to watch what is happening, so as we moved about there were lots of little groups of onlookers where ever we went. it was fun!
the photos were all done with my Canon 5d Mk ii, and a Metz strobe attached to a beauty dish. The light was just used for a touch of fill, with the sun acting as our main light.
If you would like a session like this, it can be yours from $300 including 2 8×10 prints for your portfolio. Give me a call on 0421579692 or drop me an email to get in touch.

Newtown chess club
February 7th, 2009 · Uncategorized
I visited newtown chess club on thursday, and had a chance to try out the EOS 5d Mark II’s ISO 6400 setting. i am impressed with the results, especially considering i was at a maximum of F4 for all of these. Click for the photos.
Melbourne – a city of extreme heat, beer, and coffee.

I have returned from a trip to melbourne for a week. it’s the first time i’ve been there for a holiday with a real chance to explore and meet people, and what a great city it is! Most of the trip was spent exploring the city and surrounds, carrying a moleskine and a camera. click for more photos.
A Shoot with the beautiful Viktoriya
January 11th, 2009 · Uncategorized
I have just returned from a shoot with Viktoriya at Carriageworks in Everleigh. It’s interesting to see how many ‘togs use that place as a sort of default for a portrait shoot. there were at least three groups of people there today.
This was the first non-candid portrait shoot i have done with the new camera (Canon EOS 5D MarkII) and i have to say i am quite impressed. although the flash sync speed didn’t go above 200 (i get almost 200, it cuts off just a tad at this speed), the extended low ISO setting let me get an extra stop there. I was using the good old Nikon SB24, and a METZ SCA 3000, but i had left my beauty dish behind, so for soft light i was stuck with the umbrellas. not an ideal situation, but i got some great shots anyway.
anyway, enough of that, let’s look at the photos shall we?
New year, new page format.

Hi!
You may have noticed a change to the way the page looks now, is because i’ve switched over to using wordpress. this will make the site a lot faster and cheaper to run, and will also let me add more content with less effort. go wordpress!
I will start with a photo for you. this is one from today’s trip up to Newtown for a coffee. this is Tommy, he’s an artist who sells his stuff Saturdays on king street. i hadn’t seen his stuff there before but it’s really nice and very unique, and the guy is really passionate about it too. go check it out and get some great original art for your walls.
